Whats the insurance like on those? I just moved to the UK from American and I’m having a HARD time as a 21 y.o. trying to find anything under 1K pounds a year

I’ve always wanted an mr2.

I’ve often wondered what owning one of these is like. You should certainly buy it to satisfy my curiosity.

Probably not good, I would probably flip it rather than keep it. I’m about to turn 22 and have 2 years no claims so its possible to insure it but still pretty high. But if you want something with low insurance small capacity diesels are a good bet, I only paid £700 for my first year at 20 on a 1.3 diesel panda (although don’t buy one of those, mine blew up twice.)

I would be there buying it now but it needs to be trailered unfortunately and I don’t have one. Guna see if I can get hold of one.

Me too, but they’re still quite expensive over here, way too expensive to have as a fun second car, and the fuel economy is too high to use it as a daily driver, compared to the Twingo.

Yeah I don’t know whether I could keep it, most likely clean up and sell for a small profit.

I gotcha. The prices are insane compared to back in the states! I was looking at a couple of Pandas as well but I’ll take your word and not get one. My partner used to have a red Twingo Extreme similar to yours but we sold it just after I moved in December. Could have been Twingo Twins!

Yeah they’re pretty high. Petrol pandas seem pretty reliable actually, its just the diesels which seem to have regular turbo issues. Haha oppo always needs more Twingo.

Don’t know what the average MR2 goes for over there, but here they are around €5-10k, with mileage and year almost not having an influence. The only outlier is a very rough RHD one for €3k, it doesn’t even have matching colours on all of the parts and has a lot of dings, way worse that that one you posted. If the UK has a similar market, you should be able to make quite a bit on it.

With that mileage but in nicer condition they can clear £1500, I reckon I could clean that one up into a £1000 car.

While not that much, it still is a nice added benefit for fixing up a car, which is great on its own of course.

Yeah I’d only be doing it for fun. Plus they’ve now dropped the price to £595 on their autotrader ad.

Used car ads from Britain always make me chuckle. That car would be worth ten times that much in the US.

Yeah our prices are bloody fantastic, the huge running costs balance it out though.

From what I recall these earlier ZZW30s have some kind of fatal issue with the engines, don’t know what precisely.

So what you’re saying is it needs a 2jz swap.

Haha I wasn’t going to ask you actually I know you’re crazy busy. A friends dad has one of those crappy trailers the AA use that you put two wheels up on. Need to find an electrics board for it and it should do the job if he let’s me use it.

That is well cheap, even if it needs a few things sorting on it, I’d do it! It says trade sales only, do you have anything to identify you as a trader cos I know when one of my friends wanted to buy a trade only car a few years ago he had to get someone he knew that ones a garage to go along with him to buy it for him.

I know someone who did have a trade licence but I’ll have to ask if he still does. Same guy I’m trying to borrow a trailer off.

That would be the cat in the exhaust manifold. It degrades and can get sucked back into the engine, nuking it. Also, the 1ZZ in general has really poor quality rings and they burn oil like crazy. Best thing to do is swap either a 2ZZ from a Celica GTS/Corolla XRS/Matrix XRS/Vibe GT/Elise/Exige or even a Honda K-series swap.

Yup then get a Celica 190, swap the 2ZZ GE from that & the 6 speed (make sure you put the LSD from the MR2 into the 6 speed) into the MR2 and bang, £2,000 Lotus Elise. Or go one better pick up a supercharger on eBay and bang #2, £3000 Lotus Exige.

Also yes I’ve been thinking hard about this since mid engined RWD convertibles are for some reason very to cheap to insure here. Well cheap for me at £1000ish.

I’d love to take on a project like that but I don’t really have the means. Also I couldn’t get this mr2, dude who used to have a trade licence no longer does (long story) and they refuse to sell it to a private buyer apparently.

If you do, get a 2003+ one, chances of precat failure and engine destruction are a lot lower. Source: I might buy one this Saturday.
